HDW Enterprises, which, as far as I can tell just sells big cats explains cat behavior. Near the bottom of the page they discuss cats and shoes! Marking makes sense for rubbing, but is sleeping on shoes a marking behavior? I would argue no. There is some other good information on the page, so if you like cats, take a minute and read the entire page.
